Turks and Caicos Islands deserves better from the British media

suntci.com (Opens in new tab) | Author: Hayden Boyce – SUN Publisher & Editor-in-Chief | Published: 9/7/2026

An editorial published on September 7, 2026, criticises major British news outlets for sensational and inaccurate coverage of the Turks and Caicos Islands, pointing to a recent article in The Times of London and an earlier BBC piece from September 2025. The editorial argues both publications lacked proper context and balance. The criticism centers on The Times's claim that local healthcare would be withdrawn in January amid an ongoing financial dispute between the Turks and Caicos Islands Government and InterHealth Canada. While InterHealth is continuing services during the handover, the piece notes that The Times failed to obtain direct, on-the-record responses from senior local officials. Similarly, the BBC focused heavily on the 48 murders recorded in 2024 while omitting that murder numbers were already dropping significantly by the time its story appeared. The editorial urges the Turks and Caicos Islands Government to immediately address public confusion, specifically by confirming whether there is any circumstance where healthcare becomes unavailable in January and explaining continuity plans. It also calls on local authorities to end unnecessary secrecy surrounding the hospital contract to prevent damaging misinformation from taking hold internationally.

Homicides in the Turks and Caicos Islands fell from 48 in 2024 to three recorded murders by the end of August 2026, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force announced in an operational and organizational update. Serious crime also dropped to 210 reported offences through August 2026, down from 502 in 2025 and 551 in 2024. The Force delivered 63 training courses to 1,289 attendees between October 2025 and August 2026, while 15 personnel from the RTCIPF and the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force finished the Junior Command Programme. To guide modernization and address persistent equipment, technology, and facility shortages, the Force engaged Mr. Rohan Richards as Chief Operations Officer, while ACP Dr. Terrance Bent will help steer organizational transformation. Inspector General Alison Woods has also been appointed to provide independent oversight of misconduct allegations. The fifth cohort of the Junior Command Programme is scheduled to conclude on 11 September 2026. With schools reopening, the police will deploy an increased presence on the roads, warning that drivers violating traffic regulations or causing congestion face potential enforcement and prosecution. Recruitment remains open to qualified Turks and Caicos Islanders, Permanent Residency Certificate holders, and British Overseas Territories citizens.

Satellite broadband provider Starlink Caribbean LLC officially entered the Turks and Caicos Islands market on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after receiving its operating licences. The move aims to boost internet access across outer islands and ensure communication backup during hurricanes. A ceremony at The Alexandra Resort in Providenciales marked the signing and presentation of Starlink's Satellite Service Licence and Spectrum Licence. Minister responsible for Telecommunications Shaun Malcolm stated that satellite technology will supplement fixed and mobile networks rather than replace them, especially in areas where laying traditional infrastructure is difficult. He noted that satellite links will provide an essential alternative path for families and emergency crews when hurricanes or other disasters knock out conventional towers. Telecommunications Commission Chairman Clayton Been explained that regulators consulted operators, satellite providers, and the public before issuing the framework. Been said Starlink must comply with all local telecom laws, licence conditions, and regulatory requirements, emphasizing that true competition should deliver better pricing, reliability, and customer choice.

Ahead of the upcoming school year in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Minister of Education appeared on Expressions in August 2026 to address school readiness and clarify the ministry's position following reports of potential scholarship funding cuts. The discussion also covered daycare services, offerings at the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College, and assistance for students abroad, whom the minister urged to contact the Scholarship Unit if they require support.

In an opinion column published on 26 August 2026, the author calls for accountability regarding an $8 million solar-plus-battery microgrid investment across the Turks and Caicos Islands that FortisTCI first pledged in June 2023. The column argues that ongoing high electricity bills and continued heavy reliance on imported diesel make transparency essential. The author questions the status of original plans to supply roughly 30 percent of power for North and Middle Caicos and 91 percent for Salt Cay, which were targeted for operation between 2024 and 2025. Although Pelican Energy TCI Ltd., the utility's new name, commissioned a 414-kilowatt rooftop solar system at Salterra Resort in South Caicos, the author contends that residents still lack updates on whether the Caicos and Salt Cay installations were finished or how much funding was spent. Credit data showed the utility generated $118 million in revenue in 2024. As Pelican Energy TCI Ltd. seeks planning approval for a 10-megawatt solar farm across 20 acres in Providenciales, the author urges the government to offer grants, low-interest loans, and rebates for rooftop solar. Minister for Innovation, Technology and Energy Jay Saunders has noted that officials want independent operators to sell solar power back to the grid.

Led by President Kendrick Forbes, members funded the entire drive internally, then loaded, transported, and unloaded the boxes themselves. The coalition unites local members from nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The group described the diaper drive as an initial effort, with members planning to identify further opportunities to serve and uplift families across the wider community as the organization expands.

In an opinion column published on 25 August 2026, the author argues that the community of Blue Hills in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, suffers from official neglect marked by abandoned public projects and decaying infrastructure despite years of government promises. The column contends that a waterfront project featuring five gazebos started during the administration's first term remains unfinished, with only one gazebo roofed and another reduced to posts in the ground. The author contrasts the physical state of the settlement with funds outlined in the 2026 Budget Debate, which included $650,000 for upgrades to Fuller and Clementina Walkin Park, $150,000 for road signage, and clinic fencing works. While the Minister of Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development stated that design work is done and demolition contracted for a new clinic, the author maintains that residents still face deteriorating roads and unkempt clinic grounds. To address the backlog, the author proposes designating Blue Hills as a priority constituency for 2026–2027, establishing an online infrastructure tracking dashboard, publishing quarterly progress reports, and enforcing penalties or contract reassignments when builders fail to deliver completed works.

The Office of the Deputy Governor announced the promotion of Erica Green to Head of Secretariat within the National Land Secretariat in the Turks and Caicos Islands on August 25, 2026. Green began her public service career on June 25, 2018, as an Administrative Officer in the Ministry of Finance, Investment and Trade before moving to the National Land Secretariat as Senior Administrative Officer on September 19, 2022. She earned an Associate Degree in Social Work from the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Ashworth College between 2024 and 2026, alongside professional certifications in leadership and organizational change. In her new post, Green will direct administrative and other operations, oversee Cabinet submissions, handle Parliamentary responses, and coordinate policy tracking between government leaders and stakeholders.

An opinion column published on 25 August 2026 argues that public debate in the Turks and Caicos Islands has crossed from constructive criticism into harmful political bitterness that threatens the community. The author contends that while accountability and challenging policy errors are vital for democracy, reflexively dismissing every achievement and questioning every motive destroys credibility. Because residents share close-knit communities where political opponents are neighbours and relatives, the piece maintains that citizens can oppose administration policies or disagree with the Premier while still showing respect and acknowledging when decisions succeed. The commentary calls for an approach where political debate demands accountability without denying progress, urging residents to strengthen the country by putting national interests ahead of personal feelings rather than rooting for the government to fail.

Soroptimist International of Providenciales (SIP) held its 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, sending a message across Providenciales that human trafficking has no place in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Participants took a route designed through the heart of the island's tourism district to bring awareness directly to an area vulnerable to exploitation. Attendees included representatives from the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA), the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF), the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), Wymara Resorts, and the Road Dogs Running Club. Top runners included Andres Davila and Lynn Robinson, who secured first place in the male and female 5K categories, while Officer Dellon Broadbell took first place in the male 10K. Though thankful to corporate sponsors, the organisation noted it had hoped for greater turnout from the public given that human trafficking affects local communities as well as distant nations. SIP urged the public to learn the warning signs of trafficking and prepare to join in greater numbers at its next Run/Walk.

Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital completed its 2026 Summer READY Programme in August 2026, giving high school students in Forms 3 to 5 two weeks of hands-on exposure to healthcare careers and hospital operations across the Turks and Caicos Islands. Organised by the hospital's Training and Education Department, the internship placed students across clinical departments to observe daily operations and learn directly from medical staff. Participants practiced workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and punctuality while learning about roles across the facility. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Denise Braithwaite-Tennant said practical exposure and mentorship help build the local pipeline of future nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals needed to sustain the health system. Students received certificates of completion at the conclusion of the two-week programme to recognise their participation. Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital plans to continue partnering with educational institutions and government agencies on training and internship initiatives to support long-term healthcare staffing across the islands.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Telecommunications Commission will formally present telecommunications licences to Starlink Caribbean LLC on August 27, 2026, officially authorising the satellite internet provider to enter the local market. Starlink applied for a Satellite Network and Service Licence and a Spectrum Licence to deliver internet across the territory through customer terminals and low Earth orbit satellites. The approval follows a regulatory process that began with a public consultation in November 2025 to establish rules for satellite operators, whose technology differs from traditional fixed-line and mobile networks. The invitation-only presentation takes place at 5 p.m. at The Alexandra Resort in Grace Bay, Providenciales. Full details regarding commercial rollout plans, equipment installation, speeds, and total costs will depend on Starlink and its licence conditions.
