Students and staff at Louise Garland Thomas High School successfully evacuated the campus in under 10 minutes during a planned fire drill on 6 October 2026. Officials from the Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) and the Turks and Caicos Islands Fire Department oversaw the exercise, describing it as the school’s most effective drill to date.
The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies and the Fire Department held a debriefing with safety wardens to offer guidance for future improvements. The department commended the administration for its safety commitment, stating, "Preparedness starts before an emergency occurs." They now encourage other organizations across the Turks and Caicos Islands to regularly review and practise emergency procedures to ensure community resilience.
