Fire and rescue capacity will headline a critical national security meeting, Public Safety Minister Shaun Malcolm said at the scene of a Five Cays blaze in the Turks and Caicos Islands, after a 24 August fire destroyed 13 homes and displaced 28 people.

Malcolm commended the Turks and Caicos Islands Fire and Rescue Service for stopping the Five Cays fire from spreading to neighbouring homes, and noted recent steps such as 24-hour firefighter coverage, while long-standing staffing shortages, aging equipment and inadequate water-supply arrangements persist. Minister Erwin Jay Saunders, who surveyed the damage, said congested high-density areas like Five Cays need long-term solutions.

Malcolm said the national security meeting would be held within two days, with fire and rescue at the top of the agenda. The Five Cays blaze followed severe fires in Grand Turk and an apartment fire in Blue Hills; arson and structural safety investigations remain ongoing, while residents and the People's Democratic Movement Opposition are pressing for housing reforms, modernised fire equipment and permanent operational stability.
