Miss International Turks and Caicos brought the taboo topic of poverty into public discussion during a skills workshop on August 22, 2026, at the Ports of Call Conference Room in Grace Bay. The session centered on the platform of reigning queen Adesha Gustave, aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 to end poverty.

Organizers noted that latest statistical data shows approximately 22 per cent of Turks and Caicos Islanders live in poverty. Sharlene Grant Richards, national director of Miss International TCI, said reliance on imported goods, high living costs and disasters leave residents vulnerable. While government aid exists, many do not know how to access it, prompting speakers from various backgrounds, community outreach representatives, and radio personality Dr. Cutella Talbot to examine available support.

Miss International TCI plans to revisit the topic at future events and will partner with the Rotaract Club and the Department of Development and Community Outreach to reach affected communities.
